Now Hiring for Fall: Photo Assistant in the UNI Museum
The UNI Museum’s Student Photo Assistant is responsible for capturing high-quality images of objects in the UNI Museum’s permanent collections and the Center for the History of Rural Education and Culture. The purpose of this position is to increase digital access and visibility of collections by supporting the documentation and cataloging process. The student in this role plays a key part in enhancing the usability and visual appeal of the online collections database for researchers, students, and public users.
This position is ideal for students with an interest in photography, digital imaging, museums, or visual documentation in the cultural heritage field.
Duties include photographing objects from collections, renaming and editing photos, uploading images into the collections database, and fulfilling special photography requests by UNI Museum staff.
Employment outcomes from this position:
- Gaining hands-on experience with professional cameras, lighting equipment and editing software such as Adobe Photoshop—essential tools in museum photography, digital preservation, and visual media careers.
- Developing critical thinking skills by problem solving to determine optimal lighting setups, camera angles, and editing adjustments to capture artifacts accurately and attractively.
- Developing professionalism by carefully and responsibility handling cultural objects and managing digital files; consistently meeting deadlines; and following naming protocols.

Hourly Wage Rate: $13.00
Hours Per Week: 8-10
Schedule: Flexible, Monday-Friday
Job Duration: Academic year only (Fall & Spring Semesters)
Preferred start date: June 23, 2025
Required qualifications:
- Experience using DSLR cameras for still photography.
- Familiarity with Adobe Photoshop, Lightroom, or other professional editing software.
- Familiarity working with databases.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to follow naming and documentation conventions.
Preferred qualifications:
- Experience using light boxes and photo cloths for product or artifact photography.
- Prior experience photographing historical or delicate objects.
- Strong visual judgment and artistic eye for clean, well-composed images.
