Pay

Aggressive raises based on time spent with IT-CS and performance

Numerous past employees in this position currently work at UNI as full-time employees, many of them in various IT roles. Past IT Student Tech Specialists are currently employed (at UNI and elsewhere) as system administrators, network administrators, IT specialists, software developers, and security penetration testers. This position seeks to prepare students for a future career in IT or leadership roles in general.

Duties

This position is responsible for providing computer technical support to various locations across campus. An employee with this job will spend time working alone to resolve computer issues, but the job also entails a lot of collaborative work. Many support tasks are started by one employee and finished by another, so good communication and writing skills are important. Training provided in the form of instruction documents, videos, and employee shadowing.

Characteristic Duties:

  • Monitoring incoming support incidents, and responding in an appropriate manner
  • Gathering information where necessary
  • Prioritizing incidents correctly (ie program running slowly vs workstation completely nonfunctional, what to do first?)
  • Verifying completion of all required tasks before calling the incident resolved
  • Troubleshoot, repair, and/or replace both hardware and software of systems in staff offices, labs, and classrooms, including but not limited to: monitors, printers, scanners, hard drives, and network connections
  • Utilizing and maintaining documentation for known issues, software setups, and large projects as assigned by IT-Client Services managerial staff
  • Providing remote technical support over the phone with remote access software
  • Walking and driving around campus to assist users in person
  • Using problem solving to discover new solutions to problems
  • Maintaining functioning printers and computer around campus
  • Transporting (sometimes heavy) computer equipment and printers across campus

Possible hours of work:

  • Up to 20 hours / week during regular semesters
  • Up to 40 hours / week during academic breaks (Fall, Winter, Spring, Summer)
  • No overtime
  • Core working hours are between 8 AM and 5 PM, but nights and weekends may be available.

Preferred a minimum of one year commitment. Undergraduate candidates who intend to stay employed with IT-Client Services for multiple years will be given preference. Candidates who can work during academic breaks (summer, winter) are encouraged to apply.

This job is very stable. We like to hire student employees for multiple years if possible. We are also flexible with time off compared to other on campus positions. This job provides constant learning opportunities and stable, long-term work experience in an IT position.

Qualifications

Required skills:
  • Interpersonal communication
  • Improvisation in a variety of circumstances
  • Knowing when to ask for help
  • Ability to work on multiple tasks simultaneously

Desired skills, but can be taught on the job:
  • Previous experience working with computers
  • Transferring data between computers

The tasks performed by this position are far too numerous and variable to list, but they all revolve around supporting computer workstations. Much on the job training will be provided no matter what experience a candidate comes in with. Because of this, candidates that think they are under qualified to fix computers but have general computer knowledge are still encouraged to apply.
