- overall responsibility for the newspaper
- hires diverse editorial staff, reporters, and writers on editorial side of newspaper
- represents the newspaper to external constituents
- responsible to readers
- lays out opinion page(s) for print edition
- schedules pitch and assignment meetings with editors and staff
- works with other editors to lead long-term reporting projects and focus of the newspaper
- consults with advisors regarding ethical issues, and business manager on business issues
- works with managing editor on the overall design of the newspaper, website, and social media posts
- keeps a running list of best stories, photos, and designs for journalism contests
