Good Neighbor Iowa Student Fellow

Good Neighbor Iowa aims to reduce unnecessary urban pesticide use and to transform lawn culture to encourage appreciation of diverse lawns as a way to protect child health, water quality, pets, pollinators, and biodiversity. This statewide public health education initiative is managed in partnership with the University of Northern Iowa’s Center for Energy and Environmental Education. There are TWO OPEN FELLOW POSITIONS, a Social Media student fellow, and a Community Outreach student fellow. Opportunity to stay on beyond the semester. See below.

General Information:

Up to 10 hours/week (flexible schedule); $12/hour starting rate, opportunities for increase.


Primary Duties:

Some responsibilities will be shared between all Fellows on the team. Other responsibilities will vary depending on  the position for which you are applying (see more details below).

 

Social Media Student Fellow

  • Develop social media strategy
  • Develop engaging content to post on social media 3x/week
  • Monitor social media interactions
  • Develop graphics and communication materials
  • Spearhead Local Champion Quarterly Newsletter

Community Outreach Student Fellow

  • Develop outreach to schools, childcare centers, parks, cities, institutions, etc. to encourage pesticide-free management practices
  • Communicate with community partners
  • Monitor GNI email account
  • Mail outreach materials to Local Champions


 Shared Responsibilities:  

  • Work collaboratively to expand a state-wide public health campaign
  • Handle material distribution and mailings
  • Assist program manager with other relevant tasks as they arise


Qualifications: 

  • Must be a current UNI Student (graduate or undergraduate, sophomores and juniors preferred)
  • Availability to work between classes/between hours of 8:00-5:00 (evening and weekend hours also available)
  • Able to work productively with limited direct supervision
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a team (Exceptional interpersonal communication skills)
  • Ability to meet deadlines
  • Eagerness to learn about, and passion for, environmental sustainability, pollinator habitat, public health, water quality, and/or child protection and development
  • Prior experience related to the specific position you desire
