Digital Editor

Digital Editor

  • does pre-layout for each print issue (putting correct date and issue #; new vol. # each academic year)
  • uploads every article onto the NI website using SNO content management system
  • manage/update the website design in consultation with executive editor and advisors
  • creates and sends weekly newsletter
  • loads finished issues on to ISSUU for archiving on the NI web site
  • places pre-designed ad copy/graphics from clients in the newspaper on assigned dates (works with NI clerk on receiving and scheduling ads)
  • puts ads in classified page, sometimes talking to advertisers
  • makes recruitment ads for paper
  • designs original ads for clients, if necessary
  • optimizes, selects, and edit photos for stories
  • creates some graphics for the NI
  • using pre-written (by writers) social media headlines, posts photos/images to NI social media accounts (or directs social media manager to do so)
  • keeps employee work records to assist payroll clerk
  • fills in for the executive editor when that person is not available
  • works with executive editor to create social media strategy
  • required: experience as a journalist at the Northern Iowan or other news organizations; or experience with a marketing organization
  • required: excellent written and interpersonal communication skills
  • preferred: experience with Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign, Canva and other design tools
  • preferred: experience with social media design
